Superconductor Technologies Inc. (STI), a world leader in the development and production of high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials and associated technologies, completed acceptance testing on March 16th on its Ion Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD) system. STI engineers completed the testing processes at the supplier's location and the equipment will be shipped to STI's Advanced Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Austin (Texas) for installation the first week of April.
The IBAD system performed solidly throughout the entire range of tests is operationally capable of depositing a magnesium oxide buffer layer on HTS wire templates up to one kilometer in length. During acceptance the growth of IBAD using the system with STI produced solution deposition planarization (SDP) material was successfully demonstrated. With our new IBAD machine and current SDP machine up and operational STI will have the capacity to produce wire template for the Conductus 2G HTS wire as required for the high power demonstration cable planned for completion at the end of 2012.
