The HTS DC cable project in St. Petersburg, Russia is led by the Russian utility company FGC UES (Federal Grid Company of Unified Energy System) and its R&D division R&D Center @ FGC UES. In this project, 2.5 km long HTS DC cable (50 MW, 20 kV) is used. This is the world’s first attempt to connect two electric power substations by HTS medium-voltage DC cable.
The system is planned to be installed and start commissioning in the end of 2014.
Sumitomo Electric has recently started the production and shipment of approx.100 km of HT-CA DI-BSCCO wires, planning to deliver them to the R&D Center @ FGC UES by the spring of 2013. Sumitomo Electric's HT-CA DI-BSCCO wires are well received by the market and have already been used for many HTS cable projects in the world including an HTS cable project in Yokohama, Japan.
